Library Updates

eMagazines Moving to OverDrive/Libby

Posted by egray on

Beginning on August 1st,  access to emagazines will switch from Flipster to OverDrive & Libby.

However, some popular titles are not available on OverDrive and the library will continue to offer these titles on Flipster:

  • The Atlantic Monthly
  • Consumer Reports Buying Guide
  • People
  • Real Simple
  • Sunset

What’s behind this change?

OverDrive provides convenient access to many more titles than YCL has ever been able to offer—including hundreds of children’s titles and Spanish-language titles, and titles in world languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and more.

Same Libby app, just more new titles.

Same OverDrive page, now with eMagazines.

Remember to complete the Summer Reading challenge and return to your local branch library by August 15 to collect your prizes (while supplies last) and be entered into the grand prize drawing.

Also, please fill out a short survey in English or Spanish to share your feedback about this year’s program.

Across Yolo County, over 5,000 people are participating in the Summer Reading Program. So far, they have read over 30,000 books and for more than 10,000 hours. Amazing!

A schedule of ongoing events can be found on the library’s online calendar at YoloCountyLibrary.org/Events.

Home Literacy Fun for the Winter Break

Posted by egray on

Time off for the holidays?  Many of us will be sharing kindness, embracing our loved ones, and making lasting memories. This is an exciting time of the year for children and there are lots of ways to include literacy into the FUN!

Spending time together can often include reading and storytelling. Try to find opportunities during the winter break to read together.  Visit your local public library for books on holidays you celebrate. Our library has a big selection of books. Check out books on holidays that are celebrated around the world.

Here are other early literacy activities your family can do over the winter break.

  • Come up with a list of “common” holiday words.
  • Get your flashlight, pillow, and blanket. Read your books under the covers.
  • Create a calendar of how many books you have read during the winter break.
  • Have fun with crayons, pens, and paper. Use scratch paper and thick crayons, pencils, and pens for fun doodling and scribbling time. This is great for fine motor skills! Ask children to:
    • Draw a picture of you and them
    • Write what they want to eat
    • Be curious about what they draw – ask them to show you more!
  • Play alphabet games with toys you have at home.
    • Name the first letter of each toy and write it on a card.
    • Pick a letter card and have your child bring you toys that start with that letter.
  • Singing the ABC song while you move from one activity to the next:
    • Change the words, be silly, have fun!
    • Waiting for dinner to be served
    • Washing hands or changing clothes
    • Cleaning up toys
    • Getting in the car
  • Make a family book: collect family pictures to create your own book.

School Partnerships Increase access to eBooks

Posted by egray on

Yolo County Library, Washington Unified School District in West Sacramento, and the Winters Joint Unified School District have formed an innovative technology partnership to increase access to more eBooks and eAudiobooks for students. The unique collaboration strives to promote literacy and digital learning by combining school and library digital reading resources in one app.

Using the Sora app, students in Yolo County can borrow from their school’s digital collection of classroom and pleasure reading materials AND from Yolo County Library’s children’s and young adult digital collections. Students can easily log into the Library’s digital collection using the app and their student ID, rather than requiring a separate library card. Sora will automatically filter content to only include age-appropriate titles depending on each student’s grade level.

In addition, Yolo County Library provides TumbleBook Library for all Yolo County public schools. In Tumblebook Library, kids can safely browse and read books by their favorite authors. All books are instantly available, with no need to place a hold or check out. Schools can provide Tumblebook Library on their own website.
