No commentsYolo County Library, Washington Unified School District in West Sacramento, and the Winters Joint Unified School District have formed an innovative technology partnership to increase access to more eBooks and eAudiobooks for students. The unique collaboration strives to promote literacy and digital learning by combining school and library digital reading resources in one app.
Using the Sora app, students in Yolo County can borrow from their school’s digital collection of classroom and pleasure reading materials AND from Yolo County Library’s children’s and young adult digital collections. Students can easily log into the Library’s digital collection using the app and their student ID, rather than requiring a separate library card. Sora will automatically filter content to only include age-appropriate titles depending on each student’s grade level.
In addition, Yolo County Library provides TumbleBook Library for all Yolo County public schools. In Tumblebook Library, kids can safely browse and read books by their favorite authors. All books are instantly available, with no need to place a hold or check out. Schools can provide Tumblebook Library on their own website.

No commentsYolo County Library has a New Year’s resolution for you: Read more broadly in 2023. Taking inspiration from popular online community reading challenges such as Goodreads yearly challenge and Book Riot’s “Read Harder Challenge,” the point of the program is the act of reading, itself.
In its second year, 52: a yearlong reading journey will again offer patrons new and different options to expand their reading horizons through prompts that spark one’s intellect, curiosity, and emotional intelligence throughout the year. As a community, let’s see if we can eclipse the nearly 800 participants who read over 10,000 books during this reading program in 2022.
Starting January 1st, pick up a 52 checklist at your local library branch or sign up on Beanstack to join the program digitally. Beanstack is available on mobile devices through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or can be accessed on the web at https://yolocountylibrary.beanstack.org/reader365.
52: a yearlong reading journey is free and sponsored by the Yolo County Library Foundation and the various Friends of the Library groups. For more information or to sign up, visit your local Yolo County Library branch or: https://yolocountylibrary.org/ycl52 starting January 1st. Join the celebration of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros! Everyone is welcome to participate in the free, fun, and educational celebrations taking place at Yolo County Library during the month of April. Children attending will receive a free book and enjoy educational activities, watch a special performance at select locations, or listen to a story time program.
Many nations throughout the world celebrate Día de los Niños in the spring to honor and celebrate children – who represent the hopes and dreams of every community. Día de los Niños emphasizes the importance of literacy for children from all backgrounds while encouraging libraries and community organizations to inspire and empower new generations of achievers. The event also connects children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures.
“As part of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, we recognize and respect that culture, heritage, and language as powerful tools for strengthening family learning,” said Yolo Reads Program Coordinator, Nancy Pacheco. “In addition to these Día events, Yolo County Library celebrates reading every day of the year by offering a variety of high quality, free early literacy experiences for children, parents and caregivers.”
Find out more on the Yolo County Library Event calendar or find us on Facebook and Instagram.
No reservations are required, and events are free. Programs are sponsored and supported by Yolo County’s Friends of the Library groups, donations from the community, the American Library Association, the Association for Library Service to Children, the Yolo County Library Foundation, California State Library, and the Yolo County Library.
No commentsThe Yolo County Library’s partnership with the Yolo County Library Foundation (YCLF) and the United Way was recently featured on ABC10. YCLF has provided Yolo County Library with a $5,000 grant to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to families throughout Yolo County. Parents and guardians in Yolo County with children 5 years old and under are eligible to sign up. Here are the four different ways to enroll:
“By having books in the home and encouraging adults to read to their kids, we’re hoping that when they enter kindergarten, they will be ready to read,” Mark Fink, Yolo County Librarian, said in a press release. “Essentially when children enter school ready for kindergarten it’s a good indicator they’ll be reading at grade level by the third grade, and that’s when you make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn, so I’m glad we’re able to expand eligibility for the program for children throughout the County.”

This September, Yolo County Library is joining with the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month, an initiative to remind every community member that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. All children ages 0-17 who sign up for a library card or use their existing library card in September will receive a special prize, and everyone who registers for a library card during the month will receive a free reusable bag.
“A library card provides opportunity for discovery and access to a rich and diverse world,” states Honorary Library Card Sign-Up Month Chair and author, executive producer, and founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks, Marley Dias. “It empowers you to make change and experience new stories.”
