Valentine’s Day is recognized in many countries. In Mexico, Valentine’s Day is known as the Day of Love and Friendship. As in Mexico, many people enjoy this special day with their loved ones. In recent years, due to the pandemic, it has been difficult to celebrate with our loved ones. For many of us this year is no different. In hard times like these, it is necessary to model resilience to children and show that despite the changes we can support our loved ones. The good thing is that technology has served us well by helping us keep in touch with our favorite people. Apps with video have been essential for us to communicate with one another during the pandemic.
Libraries have adapted to these changes by offering free virtual programs to our community as a great gesture of love.
From our library to you, I’d like to share 3 current virtual events to celebrate Valentine’s Day all month long:
1. Bilingual Storytime with Miss Gaby
Enjoy songs and stories with your little ones. Mondays from 6:30 to 7:00 pm.
2. Mother Goose on the Loose
Tuesdays at 10:15 am to listen to stories, sing songs, and recite classical rhymes for babies and their loved ones. This program is specially designed for the emotional and social development of your baby.
3. Lunch Storytime With Friends
On Wednesdays, join us virtually with your favorite lunch food, participate in activities and listen to stories in English.

El Día de San Valentín por lo general es un día festivo mundialmente. En México se conoce como el Día del Amor y la Amistad. Como en México, en muchos países por lo general la gente disfruta de este dia especial con sus seres queridos. En los últimos años, a causa de la pandemia ha resultado difícil celebrar este día especial con nuestros seres queridos. Para muchos de nosotros este año no es diferente. En tiempos duros como estos es necesario modelar la resiliencia a los niños y mostrar que a pesar de los cambios nos podemos unir en comunidad con nuestros seres amados. Lo bueno es que la tecnología ha servido mucho a nuestro favor para aun poder reunirnos con nuestros seres favoritos. Aplicaciones con la capacidad de video han resultado especialmente esencial para comunicarnos con unos a otros durante la pandemia.
Las bibliotecas no son la excepción y nos hemos adaptado al cambio ofreciendo programas virtuales gratis a nuestra comunidad como un gran gesto de amor. De nuestra biblioteca a Ustedes, aquí les comparto 3 eventos virtuales para celebrar el dia del Amor y la Amistad todo el mes:
1. Hora de Cuentos Bilingüe con Miss Gaby
Disfruta de canciones y cuentos con tus seres pequeños. Lose lunes de Las 6:30 a las 7:00 de la noche.
2. Mother Goose on the Loose (Madre Gansa Anda Suelta)

Yolo County Library has a New Year’s resolution for you: Read more broadly in 2023. Taking inspiration from popular online community reading challenges such as Goodreads yearly challenge and Book Riot’s “Read Harder Challenge,” the point of the program is the act of reading, itself.
In its second year, 52: a yearlong reading journey will again offer patrons new and different options to expand their reading horizons through prompts that spark one’s intellect, curiosity, and emotional intelligence throughout the year. As a community, let’s see if we can eclipse the nearly 800 participants who read over 10,000 books during this reading program in 2022.
Starting January 1st, pick up a 52 checklist at your local library branch or sign up on Beanstack to join the program digitally. Join the celebration of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros! Everyone is welcome to participate in the free, fun, and educational celebrations taking place at Yolo County Library during the month of April. Children attending will receive a free book and enjoy educational activities, watch a special performance at select locations, or listen to a story time program.
Many nations throughout the world celebrate Día de los Niños in the spring to honor and celebrate children – who represent the hopes and dreams of every community. Día de los Niños emphasizes the importance of literacy for children from all backgrounds while encouraging libraries and community organizations to inspire and empower new generations of achievers. The event also connects children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures.
“As part of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, we recognize and respect that culture, heritage, and language as powerful tools for strengthening family learning,” said Yolo Reads Program Coordinator, Nancy Pacheco. “In addition to these Día events, Yolo County Library celebrates reading every day of the year by offering a variety of high quality, free early literacy experiences for children, parents and caregivers.”
No reservations are required, and events are free. Programs are sponsored and supported by Yolo County’s Friends of the Library groups, donations from the community, the American Library Association, the Association for Library Service to Children, the Yolo County Library Foundation, California State Library, and the Yolo County Library.
Aprender su lengua materna es fundamental para el desarrollo cognitivo y la autoconciencia de los niños por muchas razones. ¡Este blog ha mencionado algunas de esas razones previamente! Mientras los que no forman parte de la cultura pueden aprender a apreciar los idiomas y las personas que pertenecen a diversas culturas Nativo Americanas, para aquellos dentro de esas comunidades es mucho más. Es sentir orgullo y empoderamiento en su propia identidad indígena.
Un estudio de 2010 realizado por el Censo encontró que solo en los EE. UU. Existen 169 lenguajes hablados por personas Nativo Americanas. Mientras que los lenguajes Nativo Americanos constituyen una gran parte de los lenguajes distintos al inglés (alrededor del 40% en realidad), solo 4 millones de personas hablan esos lenguajes.
Esta no es información nueva para las tribus Nativo Americanas, ya que han hecho enormes esfuerzos desde hace mucho tiempo para preservar sus culturas al enseñar esos lenguajes a las futuras generaciones. Estos esfuerzos por revitalizar sus lenguas no han sido en vano, basta con ver algunos de los resultados que se han obtenido desde que comenzaron estos programas.

Learning one’s mother tongue is essential for children’s cognitive development and self-awareness for so many reasons. This blog has mentioned a few! While those on the outside can learn to appreciate the languages and the people who belong to diverse Native American cultures that have persisted for those within Native American communities, it is so much more. It is a sense of pride and empowerment in self-identity.
A 2010 study conducted by the Census found that 169 Native American spoken languages exist in the US alone. While Native American languages make up a large chunk of non-English languages (about 40% actually) only 4 million people speak those languages.
This isn’t new information for Native American tribes as they’ve already made enormous efforts to preserve their cultures by teaching those languages to future generations. These efforts at revitalizing their languages have not been in vain, just take a look at some of the results that have yielded since such programs started.
Here at YCL we have a collection of books and resources for those who are seeking to reconnect with their languages or learn about Native American languages. Please note that some of these books provide full sentences, others have phrases or words within a mostly English text.

The Yolo County Library’s partnership with the Yolo County Library Foundation (YCLF) and the United Way was recently featured on ABC10. YCLF has provided Yolo County Library with a $5,000 grant to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to families throughout Yolo County. Parents and guardians in Yolo County with children 5 years old and under are eligible to sign up. Here are the four different ways to enroll:
“By having books in the home and encouraging adults to read to their kids, we’re hoping that when they enter kindergarten, they will be ready to read,” Mark Fink, Yolo County Librarian, said in a press release. “Essentially when children enter school ready for kindergarten it’s a good indicator they’ll be reading at grade level by the third grade, and that’s when you make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn, so I’m glad we’re able to expand eligibility for the program for children throughout the County.”

Habla con un lenguaje simple. Ayude a sus pequeños a comprender utilizando frases sencillas como: “Sara vive con su tía. Su tía es su familia ”o“ Riley tiene dos mamás. Son su familia”. Puede resultar difícil hablar de conceptos tristes como la muerte o la separación. Este blog y la biblioteca del condado de Yolo tienen más información sobre cómo hablar con los niños sobre el duelo.
Háblales sobre las diferentes familias que conocen a su alrededor como sus vecinos y amigos. Puede resultar difícil hablar de familias diferentes a la suya. Si hay algo que no sabe, fomenta la curiosidad al simplemente decir “No lo sé, averigüémoslo juntos”. Consulta las organizaciones que he mencionado al final de este blog para aprender juntos en familia sobre familias diversas.

The holidays are coming up! It can be a great time to spend with loved ones. On the other hand, it can be rather difficult for family members who are grieving for the ones who are not here. We often think that children are not able to understand changes within family dynamics.
While it is true that it may be difficult for children to understand, for the most part, children are resilient and accepting. All they want is to be in a family with love and stability, healthy boundaries, behavior, and love. After all, families are just groups of people who respect and genuinely love one another as they face life together.
Here are three ways to help your child learn about different families:
1) Keep it simple. Help your little ones understand by stating simple phrases like, “Sarah lives with her Aunt. Her Aunt is her family” or “Riley has two moms. They are their family”. It might feel difficult to talk about sad concepts like death or separation. This blog and Yolo County Library have more information about talking with children about grief.
2) Talk to them about the different families they know – their neighbors and friends. It can be difficult to talk about families that are different from your own. If there is something you don’t know, nurture curiosity by simply stating “I don’t know, let’s find out together”. Check out the organizations listed below to help you learn together as a family.
3) Read with your child and your loved ones. There really is no better way to learn something new. It is an excellent way to spark a conversation about what family means and to embrace the ways your family is truly unique.
Here are some books that help children understand the diverse families and welcome the differences in their own. Even though some of these books are in Spanish, you can still talk about the story based on the illustrations.

Invitar a un perro nuevo a su casa puede traerle inmensa alegría y felicidad a usted y a sus pequeños. Sin embargo, traer un nuevo amiguito peludo es una tarea enorme que requiere planificación y preparación. Aunque su pequeño puede estar emocionado de jugar con su nuevo amigo, es importante permitir suficiente tiempo para que tanto su peque como el nuevo cachorro se adapten.
Supervise siempre a su peque durante el tiempo de conexión con el nuevo perro para mantener la seguridad de todos.
Enséñele a su hijo cómo y cuándo abordar correctamente a su nuevo perro con respeto.
Permitir que su hijo ayude con tareas simples en el cuidado de su nueva mascota también es una gran oportunidad para que su hijo aprenda que un perro no es un juguete y que requiere bastante trabajo para cuidarlo.
Más importante aún, es crucial investigar tanto como sea posible antes de darle la bienvenida a un nuevo animal a su hogar.
