In the United States, libraries have embraced this tradition as Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, a day that highlights the power of books, bilingual learning, and access to literacy for every child. It’s all about celebrating who children are, the languages they speak, and the stories they carry.

El Día de los Niños tiene sus raíces en México y se celebra en todo el mundo para reconocer la importancia de los niños en nuestras comunidades. Actividades de alfabetización sencillas y divertidas en casa
Noche de cuentos en familia: Deje que cada niño elija un libro favorito. Tomen turnos para leer en voz alta; ¡incluso los más pequeños pueden “leer” las imágenes!
¡Actúalo!: Convierta un cuento en una pequeña obra. Use disfraces, voces graciosas o títeres hechos con calcetines.
Crea tu propio libro: Dobla hojas de papel y deja que tu hijo dibuje y escriba su propia historia. ¡Engrápalo para convertirlo en un “libro” real!
Marzo ya está aquí, trayendo días más largos, ¡flores en pleno florecimiento y la oportunidad perfecta para florecer con la lectura! -Organicen una Búsqueda de Palabras de la Naturaleza escribiendo palabras simples como “flor”, “pájaro” o “nube” en papel y buscándolas afuera.
-Después de leer, animen a su hijo(a) a dibujar lo que vio o a inventar su propia historia primaveral inspirada en su entorno.
Incluso llevar una canasta de libros afuera para un acogedor “picnic de lectura” puede convertir una tarde común en una aventura literaria.

Looking for simple outdoor literacy activities?
Try a Story Walk in your backyard or local park, read a page, then pause to find something from the story in nature. Try the Capay Open Space Park Story Trail by Yolo County Library
Create a Nature Word Hunt by writing simple words like “flower,” “bird,” or “cloud” on paper and searching for them outside.
After reading, encourage your child to draw what they saw or make up their own spring story inspired by their surroundings.
Bring a basket of books outside for a cozy “reading picnic”. Turn an ordinary afternoon into a literacy adventure!
Nature and literacy go hand in hand. Stories about gardens, animals, rain, and growth help children expand vocabulary while experiencing these things in real life. Reading these stories together helps children visualize settings, understand seasonal changes, and engage all their senses in the learning experience. Yolo County Library is excited to announce a new K-2 library resource. PebbleGo is a database specifically geared toward the needs of K-2 learners. It helps them learn foundational research skills and provides critical early-reader support like audio voiceovers and text highlighting.
You can access more than 300,000 e-books and audiobooks available on The Palace Project, a free mobile phone app, thanks to a grant from the California State Library.
Palace Project has integrated Yolo County Library’s Overdrive, SimplyE, enki books, audiobooks, and more all in one place. Find it in the Apple Store or Google Play
