Celebrating Family Literacy: Día de los Niños
Spring is the perfect time to celebrate our children, their stories, and the joy of reading together! One of the most meaningful celebrations for families is Día de los Niños (Day of the Child), a holiday that honors children, literacy, and cultural diversity.
The Story Behind Día de los Niños
Día de los Niños has roots in Mexico and is celebrated around the world to recognize the importance of children in our communities. In the United States, libraries have embraced this tradition as Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, a day that highlights the power of books, bilingual learning, and access to literacy for every child. It’s all about celebrating who children are, the languages they speak, and the stories they carry.

- Act it out: Turn a story into a mini play. Use costumes, silly voices, or puppets made from socks.
- Create your own book: Fold paper together and let your child draw and write their own story. Staple it into a “real” book!
