Every child grows and learns in their own special way. Parenting comes with questions, and asking about your child’s development is one way of learning more about them.
As parents and caregivers, we are present for many exciting moments: hearing a new word, watching a child take the first step, seeing them make a friend, sharing a favorite book, and learning to express their feelings.
Sometimes we may also wonder:
- Is my child developing as expected?
- What skills might come next?
- How can I support my child at home?
These are great questions that a developmental screening such as the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) can help with!
Through connections with Yolo County Library, First 5 Yolo, and Help Me Grow Yolo, families can learn about developmental screening and resources available to support their young children.
The Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) helps parents look at different areas of their child’s development, such as communication, movement, problem-solving, and everyday skills.
The ASQ:SE (Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional) focuses on a child’s social and emotional development, including how children communicate their needs, manage emotions, interact with others, and develop relationships.
It Is a Tool—Not a Test!
A developmental screening isn’t about passing or failing, and it doesn’t give your child a diagnosis. Think of it as another tool in your parenting toolbox.
You know your child best. Your observations, questions, and experiences are important. Screening can help you recognize your child’s growing skills, discover activities you can try together, and identify areas where additional information or support may be helpful.
Sometimes the result may simply be: Keep playing, talking, reading, singing, and learning together! Other times, it may be helpful to check a skill again later or talk with your child’s healthcare provider or a child-development professional.

Support your child’s development during the everyday moments you already share:
- Read a book and ask, “What do you see?”
- Sing songs and clapping together.
- Name feelings: “You look excited!”
- Count toys while cleaning up.
- Talk about your day during dinner.
- Let your child turn pages, point, ask questions, and tell stories.
These simple interactions build language, relationships, confidence, and a love of learning.
