Career Online High School

Yolo County Library’s Career Online High School (COHS) offers adults the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate online.

To qualify:

  • be age 19 and over
  • a resident of Yolo County
  • have a Yolo County Library card

If you don’t have a card, you can visit any Yolo County Library branch with written verification of your current address and a photo ID. Fill out an application and then staff can issue you a card.

The library’s program provides a limited number of scholarships to qualified adult learners who are looking to expand their career opportunities, prepare for workforce entry or continue their education. To be considered for the program, fill out the Are You Ready survey. Once filled out, the library will contact you and have you choose a career and enroll in a prerequisite course. Once you complete the prerequisite course, you with have an in-person interview with library staff.

Once enrolled, COHS pairs each student with an online academic coach, who provides the student with an individual career path, offers ongoing guidance, evaluates performance and connects the student with the resources needed to master the courses. Students will be given up to 18 months to complete the program.

The program can be accessed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, via the internet. Students can work at their own pace and when it is convenient for them.

What is Career Online High School (COHS)?
Career Online High School (COHS) is an online high school diploma and career certification program available through the Yolo County Library. This is a pilot program offering free enrollment to a limited number of students.

Who can apply to COHS?
Applicants must be adults (ages 18 and older) who live in Yolo County and wish to earn a high school diploma. All applicants must have a Yolo County Library card in good standing, or be willing to get one.

Will COHS students receive their GED?
No. This is not a GED program. Successful graduates will earn a high school diploma and a career certification through an accredited online high school.

How will people be selected for the program?
Enrollment is limited. Adults must fill out an online survey, take a prerequisite course, and have an in-person interview to receive a scholarship in the program.

How long will it take for students to complete the program?
Students will be given up to 18 months to complete the program, which will consist of 18 credits. Students accepted into the program may transfer up to 14 credits from their former high school. Depending on how many credits the student is able to transfer, the program can be completed in as few as five months.

Is COHS accredited?
Career Online High School is accredited as an online school district by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) accreditation seal. This means that the district and all of its schools are accredited, and that Smart Horizons Career Online Education is recognized across the nation as a quality school system, delivering a SACS accredited online high school diploma.
